I just got an email from Nextune saying that I've won an iPod mini.
They've sent me an affidavit to sign and notarize and fax back to them.
On the affidavit, among the information they ask for is my social
security number.
Since I've never won anything before, I don't know what kind of info
they need.
I'm not sure why they would need my SSN (unless it's for tax purposes.)
If anyone is wondering what this is about, go to www.nextune.net and
enter their contest.

I'm not promoting their website, I just want some advice as to whether
I should give them my SSN or not.

If you're sure they're real (and you know you entered this drawing, etc), then yes, you need to give them your SSN, since that iPod has to be reported to the IRS as income, and that's the identifier the IRS uses.

(note, this can be the downside of winning contests. I went to the HGTV 'Dream Home' contest site, and looked up what previous winners had done with the houses they won.

One person was quoted as 'promptly selling it when handed the $250,000 tax bill'. In fact I think only one winner ever actually kept the house.

This actually caused a charity here to not give away it's raffle prize (a custom built home worth some $500K) two years running, because the winners couldn't pay the tax bill, or sell the custom home that was won (but not yet built) fast enough to pay it without incurring penalties and interest)
