I have external mini-speakers installed on my G3. When I don't want to wake
my family to the loud gong, I turn the speakers off. No sounds get thru. If
I want to listen, I use headphones plugged into the external
speaker...easier to plug into them than climbing on top of my desk to reach
the back ports of the G3. (Especially when I'm trying not to wake up the
household, hee, hee.)

When I use my PowerBook while traveling, I carry the plug part cut off of a
broken set of mini-head plugs. This serves as a quick mute shortcut. I could
just as well bring a set of headphones with me, but the plug is nice and
small and easy to keep packed in the PB case. Learned this tip from Mac
Secrets book, thank you Mr. Pogue!
