...I found the Quiet Start extension on this webpage: http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/systems/mac/amug/files/system/p-q/ and downloaded it and popped the extension into my System Folder.
Another way of having a quiet start is writing two scripts with ApplScript: set volume to zero and set volume to whatever. Place the former inside the Shutdown Items folder and the latter inside the Startup Items folder.
