There is a utility for pre X os that allows you to control the volume of the
chime that doesn't affect other volume levels. I can't remember the name of it
but I have it at home. No time to search for it now, but if you still want it
and can't find it, let me know. I'll dig it up.

There is an extension called "Quiet Start" tha's suppose to do the job. I have it and will send on request, privately.
