Thanks very much , Rich and Harold. I found the Quiet Start extension on
this webpage: http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/systems/mac/amug/files/system/p-q/
and downloaded it and popped the extension into my System Folder. Now my
Mac starts up and/or restarts in restful silence!

Ah, what a pleasant difference!
