I put a pair of applescripts in my shut down & startup folders-- one to turn
the volume all the way down, and one to turn it back up to my preferred
volume. That way there is never a loud "gong" but I don't have to do
anything to put the sound back on.
Don't know how you'd do it in OS X but in OS 9:
tell application "Finder"
set volume 3.5
--or 7 or whatever for startup and 0 or 1 or whatever for shut down
end tell
and save it as an application (uncheck "stay open", check "no startup
screen") in you startup (vol raiser) and shut down (vol lowerer) folders.
