Thanks John-
I read all the useful info you suggested at Macintouch, downloaded and
installed the extensions from OWC/macsales, and still have the same problem.
Here is what the MacSales extension revisions were:
Installed w 9.2.1 MacSales Package
USB Device Extension 1.5.5 1.5.6
USB Software Locator 1.5.5 1.5.6
USB Mass Storage Extension NONE 2.04
USB Mass Storage Support 2.1.1 2.04
USB Support 1.5.5 1.4.1
The last three extensions were labelled by Apple as being part of "USB
Adapter Card Support 1.4.1", which sounds exactly like what I needed. The
first two are part of OS9.2.2. Can't figure out what is still going wrong,
but thanks anyway for all the useful info. Many people at Macintouch used
these extensions successfully. One person had success in changing the slot
position of the card, another zapped PRAM and got USB working.
As a sidelight, there are scary reports on those same pages about data
corruption when moving large files to Firewire drives connected through
combo cards, even the more expensive Orange and Adaptec cards. File copying
was corrupt, and the finder did not warn of the errors. Maybe trying to
keep this old beige G3 alive with add-ons is not worth the potential hassle.
