Dear List,

I have been mucking around inside of my newly acquired G3 MT after having just recently partitioned my H.D. into three partitions courtesy of the great resources of this list. I have now ventured into hardware land, and I am confounded by the mystery and a couple of pounderables.

But first a brief up date, my G3 is a 300MHz cpu with a 20 meg IDE H.D. and a IDE CD ROM. It has a SCSI CD burner and DVD player connected to a SCSI card in a PCI slot. There is also a 56k USB modem connected to a USB card installed in the second PCI slot. I currently have a modest 192 Megs of RAM.

The Mystery
I have 2 ribbon cables coming up off of my mother board. One is split into two ribbons that are both clamped onto by several IDE connectors. Currently my H.D. (jumperd as master) and my CD ROM drive (jumpered as slave) are are both connected to this cable. The hard drive works beautifully. The CD ROM drive is literarily a no show (does not mount on the desktop.)

The other cable is not split, has a couple of IDE connectors on it and it sleeps peacefully unconnected to anything in the drive bay.

What are these cables? Are they properly connected to their respective hardware? Are my jumpers properly set?

A Ponderable
I have been looking for what "Rev" my mother board is. I can find nothing on the mother board that says "Rev B". However, under the Apple logo is a serial number with a "B"; at the end of it (820-0991-B). Does that make this a "Rev B" model?

Another Ponderable
When I start up the G3. there is a significant period of time after the start up chime when nothing seems to be happening. Then, the screen will light up and the words "can't open can't open can't open..." track across the screen, and then the screen blanks out, while I start to down load a heart attack. However, quite quickly, the screen lights up again and the floppy/question mark/classic Mac icons flash and it continues to boot up. While the boot process proceeds, the monitor blinks a couple of times. What is this whole start up procedure about? Why so long before anything happens, and what does "can't open can't open..." signify? Could the cables of mystery be involved somehow? Is screen blinking at start up normal (I would think not)?

Last Ponderable
Above all else, I need to have the CD ROM problem solved. Without it working properly, I can not do very much. What say you lads and lassies? To the hunt!?
