Clear the pram (when it starts, command-option-p-r) or reset the NVRAM (when it starts, command-option-o-f, 'reset-all' and/or 'reset-nvram' at the prompt) or pull the battery. Or all three, even, if you want to be extra efficient. It takes so long to give you a screen because its POST'ing or cycling through the BIOS or something.. Clearing out the pram (programmable ram, aka nvram or non-volitale ram) should help that along. As for the "cant open" bit, it's trying to access a boot partition on the first device, then times out, then says it can't find an OS (the froppy with a question mark), then magically finds one and continues along its merry way. I have a pair of machines that absolutely refused under any circumstances to do anything but correctly install from CD, but would only load the OS from the CD. The mistake? I had the IDE cables plugged into the incorrect connections on the mb, and the Mac only wants to really boot from the first paritition on the first IDE chain. Loud cursing, clearing the pram, reset-nvram from open firmware, and flipping the IDE connectiions resolved one of those issues. I haven't tried teh second one, but no doubt there'll be large scale profanity usage when I get around to it, followed by reset-nvram and flopping the IDE cables. :) -- http://www.infotainment.org <-> more fun than a poke in your eye. http://www.eighteenpercent.com <-> photography and portfolio. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
