Greetings all. Earlier, Robert asked thoughtfully: On 4/19/04 7:33 AM, Robert S. Rowan of [EMAIL PROTECTED] sent

And then continued......... > The Mystery > I have 2 ribbon cables coming up off of my mother board. One is split > into two ribbons that are both clamped onto by several IDE > connectors. Currently my H.D. (jumperd as master) and my CD ROM drive > (jumpered as slave) are are both connected to this cable. The hard > drive works beautifully. The CD ROM drive is literarily a no show > (does not mount on the desktop.) Peter kindly responded about the cables (2 IDE ports, 1 SCSI on beige G3 towers). Usually with 2 IDE busses, there is 1 used for the HD and 1 for the CD-ROM (on most all the Mac arrangements I've seen), and both devices can be set to "Master" this way. Having them both on the same chain makes me suspect that the CD-ROM is *also* set to "Master" along w/ the HD - sure fire way to create problems with both on the same chain. Set the CD to "slave", Robert, or plug it into the secondary IDE bus. HTH > What are these cables? Are they properly connected to their > respective hardware? Are my jumpers properly set? As above. Later, Robert asked: > Another Ponderable > When I start up the G3. there is a significant period of time after > the start up chime when nothing seems to be happening. Then, the > screen will light up and the words "can't open can't open can't > open..." track across the screen, and then the screen blanks out, > while I start to down load a heart attack. However, quite quickly, > the screen lights up again and the floppy/question mark/classic Mac > icons flash and it continues to boot up. I have a machine doing this at work. Really odd - I've never seen it on a Mac before; and the font is unusually "un-Mac-like" (looks like PC programming font I used to see on 386s). The boot-up scenario is exactly as Robert describes, and I too would be curious as to why this is transpiring. Best regards, Dana -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
