i have moved up to x on the main drive and the card works fine with anything i plug in.

I've seen this numerous times by now (had to do it myself with my Older Keyspan card), probably your solution is to remove all usb extensions and then install the older ones from the USB support 1.4 package. Probably still available somewhere at Apple's website.
