for a few hundred dollars I might be able to set him up with a much faster
Mac with lots more storage for his digital photos, and the capability to

if his old serial port printers would plug into it also, or could be
adapted to it.
The "sweet spot" for price vs cost now appears to be the early G4's. The prices on the B&W G3's have really dropped. My 2 worth is buy the fastest bus G4 that's meets your price point. It easy enough to add a faster processor, bigger HD, more RAM, faster CD or DVD, but you cannot easily alter the "plumbing". You're pretty much stuck with the system bus. All the other stuff can be changed fairly easily and lends it self to changing it at a pace that suits a budget.
I'd sure like to hear any recommendations for what model of used G-Mac would do a good job for him, and be a good value for the money.
Th other argument for an early G4 is someday official support for the G3's will cease. Maybe 10.6 or 11.?. The G4's are likely to be supported for a lot longer period.
