In your situation both operating systems need to be on the same (8 GB) partition. I had the same issue with a Bondi I was tinkering with. Classic will run, but the machine will not boot into 9 in your type of configuration. Boot to the OS 9 CD and do a clean install of it on the same part that X is on. You'll be OK.
