I have gotten some locations where an "error message" comes up saying that
the browser needs Shockwave in order to continue in dynamic presentation
(providing a "just text" option to continue) - sorry, I cannot think of one
off hand - perhaps the issue is the the site has been set to IE-exclusive?
In response, I download, say, the Shockwave installer, launch it, and it
doesn't recognize iCab as a viable browser to install into - all this is on
OS 9.2.1 btw.

Macromedia. sigh. Three issues to deal with:

1. Macromedia couldn't be bothered to follow Apple's standards, so instead of installing the plug-ins into the general ":System Folder:Internet Plug-Ins" folder, they have browser-specific installations -- which dump the plug-ins in the brower's private plug-ins folder. The workaround for iCab: Install the plug-ins for any of the other browsers then just drag the pieces from that browser's plug-ins folder to the system's plug-ins folder.

2. Macromedia couldn't be bothered to follow Apple's standards, so their plug-ins not only don't use temp memory, but they don't detect out of memory erros well. This means that to handle complicated Flash and Shockwave, you have to increase the browser's preferred memory size. And if the browser crashes on a Flash-heavy page -- give it more memory.

3. Macromedia couldn't be bothered to follow Apple's standards, so their plug-ins don't "register" themselves properly with the browsers. This means that the ancient Flash 4 support built into QuickTime 5 and 6 can sometimes end up overriding things. So if you've correctly installed the latest Flash plug-in, but getting errors saying you need a newer plug-in, try checking the browser's prefs then the Internet prefs then QuickTime's prefs. Make sure it isn't trying to use QuickTime for .swf files.
