Since my young daughter had seen the Titanic exhibit in Chicago, I thought it would be neat for her to see the Titanic movie that won so many academy awards a few years back, but of course I didn't want her to also see all the nudity and steamy sex that was in it, nor hear the profanity spewed by certain characters at times. So I bought a DVD of the movie at WalMart, fed it into my Mac through the Miglia video converter box, edited out all the objectional stuff in iMovie (and muted the cusswords), and then brought out a nice G-rated version of Titanic onto videocassette for the family to watch. It's a hit with everyone who sees it, and allows kids to get a sense of how huge the ship was and what a tragedy the sinking and loss of life was, without any of the bad influences of the original movie.
Thus, a VCR that will play both VHS tapes and DVD allows you to send entire commercial movies in either format into your Mac through the Miglia box for editing. The Miglia will also defeat copy-protection schemes that prevent direct VCR-to-VCR copying, and gives you nice clean video to send back out of your Mac (which can THEN be used for VCR-to-VCR copying if you like, so you don't tie up your Mac making more copies).
Maybe a camcorder that will do analog-to-DV conversions can also do the above (used as an intermediary between the VCR and the Mac), although I doubt it could defeat a commercial movie's copy protection, but I could be wrong. Anybody tried it?
