before giving up on the ram, it's worth cleaning the contacts. use a clean pencil eraser (pen erasers are too abrasive) and polish the contacts until they are shiny, on an antistatic surface like a wooden table or newspaper, and not in a room with carpet!. you'll have to blow off the eraser crumbs, the eraser can be cleaned using a piece of clean paper as needed. this is often a problem with ram that's been in for several years, particularly in humid areas, i've run into it a lot on older macs. might fix your other ram problems as well. generally, the only problem with generic ram has been when it's programed wrong (there is a small permanent memory chip on each dimm with information about the dimm, some manufacturers programed that memory wrong), and os x will generally ignore or complain about such ram, so your ram is probably ok. dust bunnies in the machine or a fan not working are also good things to check, any of these things can cause problems. also run your disk utilities, since os x uses swap space drive problems can cause problems that look like memory problems.
