There was a time (Sat, Sep 11, 2004 at 6:30 PM) when Philip Stortz said this thing:

before giving up on the ram, it's worth cleaning the contacts. use a
clean pencil eraser
(pen erasers are too abrasive) and polish the contacts until they are
shiny, on an
antistatic surface like a wooden table or newspaper, and not in a room
with carpet!. you'll have to blow off the eraser crumbs, the eraser can be cleaned
using a piece of
clean paper as needed. this is often a problem with ram that's been in
for several years,
particularly in humid areas,.

The erase-to-polish tip is a one I've never heard before. I'll try it
first thing tomorrow morning and hope for the best. I'm in the Northeast
so I think that qualifies as a humid area.

That's an old trick I used to use on my original Nintendo cartridges when they would act flaky. Always worked pretty well. Never used one of those fancy cleaning kits. (yeah, I'm an old fart.....)
