bad ram can cause drive corruption, or the data on the drive may be badly corrupted.  
do
you have any other disk utilities?  the one that comes with the os doesn't do 
everything
some others do, i believe.  if cleaning the ram doesn't fix it, i'd seriously consider 
the
painful format and reinstall option, sometimes that's the only way, though make sure to
back up your' files first.
