I've been having trouble with my computer lately and I don't know if it's
hardware or software based. When I finally upgraded to OS X a couple
years ago I did run into some problems with questionable RAM and had to
take out two 256 MB modules. Those crashes were kernel panics and would
happen several times (6+) each day. What's left are two more generic, 256
MB modules.

My current problems seem to be centered around applications suddenly
quitting. This has happened with PowerMail, Safari, RealPlayer, iTunes,
Freehand--just about everything as far as I can tell. It may or may not
have started after I upgraded to OS 10.3.5--difficult to recall now. I am
currently experimenting with turning off some of the startup items
(QuickSilver, WeatherMenu, and CalendarClock all reside in the menu bar
at this time) and logging in to a test account.

(By the way, what's up with some startup items not launching after a restart?)

I used FontBook and resolved a lot of duplicate fonts it detected and
have disabled most fonts not essential for the OS.

If I find I have to start over as a new user:
  - Can I transfer some settings and preferences (email account settings,
bookmarked URLs, data from Address Book and Mail, etc.) from my current
account to the new account?
  - Or would this defeat the purpose of starting over with a clean, new
account?

Consistent no matter how I've logged in is that Displays will not load in
System Preferences--I only get the spinning beach ball.
  - Should I reinstall my ATI drivers (for a Radeon 7000 Mac card)?
  - I thought I'd read that all the most recent drivers were included
with Panther. If so, is it possible to reinstall these drivers from the
OS upgrade disk?

I thought I might reinstall the OS but ran into these problems:
  - My Jaguar install disk did not recognize any disks where I might
install it.
  - My Panther OS _upgrade_ install disk won't allow me to install since
a) an OS less than 10.3 does not exist on any other disks and b) it won't
archive and install over 10.3.5 on my Startup disk.
(Just saw Steve Wood's warning dated 9/9/04 about not installing an older
version of the OS over a newer one--thanks for the timely info.)

The only external drive I have is a Firewire CD burner.
I have not zapped the PRAM or reset the CUDA switch -- don't know if
that's warranted here.
I have installed OS updates up to but not including the most recent
Security Update 2004-09-07.

Thanks for any pointers. I'm really stuck on where to go from here.
