Hello, I am the ultimate new Mac user, I just purchased a used G3 B&W from my school. They sold it "as is" with no operating system and they are adamant that they will not install one for me. Fine, I figure I can do that, but it has no floppy drive, only a zip drive and CD ROM. I ordered Mac OS 8 from a retailer and they sent it on CD ROM. To boot up, I am told to press and hold the "C" button at startup......to no avail, I can hear the drive spinning, but nothing happens. Just the happy Mac face alternating with a question mark to taunt me. Does anyone know if this OS is compatible with my machine? I have read different things on different websites, and this confusion may be due to the name Powermac; I guess different machines share the name or something? Until I can get an operating system going on it, I can't find out much about the version and memory and things so I'm pretty well stuck. I am just so way sick of windows I can't stand it and they really blew it when they put out service pack 2 for XP. I want my machine to work the way I want it to and windows just plain sucks. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Daniel, welcome to the g-list. I believe your B&W will only run OS 8.6 or higher. Most here on the list who use something other than OS-X usually run OS 9.x. There are many places to find a copy of OS 9, eBay, OWC and others. Good luck.
Just a message from Doug...
