Hello, I am the ultimate new Mac user, I just purchased a used G3 B&W from my school. They sold it "as is" with no operating system and they are adamant that they will not install one for me. Fine, I figure I can do that, but it has no floppy drive, only a zip drive and CD ROM. I ordered Mac OS 8 from a retailer and they sent it on CD ROM. To boot up, I am told to press and hold the "C" button at startup......to no avail, I can hear the drive spinning, but nothing happens. Just the happy Mac face alternating with a question mark to taunt me. Does anyone know if this OS is compatible with my machine? I have read different things on different websites, and this confusion may be due to the name Powermac; I guess different machines share the name or something? Until I can get an operating system going on it, I can't find out much about the version and memory and things so I'm pretty well stuck. I am just so way sick of windows I can't stand it and they really blew it when they put out service pack 2 for XP. I want my machine to work the way I want it to and windows just plain sucks. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Just to be clear about this, you need to push and hold the "C" key BEFORE you hit the power button. Then continue to hold the "C" key until the machine actually boots. You may see the flashing question mark/folder symbol a couple of times, but it should go away as the machine continues the boot process. I usually hold the "C" key until I actually see the desktop start coming up, then I let go. The desktop will have a background covered with pics of a CD when booted from the CD. As Others have stated, you MAY need at least OS 8.5 or 8.6 for a B&W. CHeck Apple's Knowledge Base for more info.
