Doug writes, <Hi Daniel, welcome to the g-list. I believe your B&W will only run OS 8.6 or higher. Most here on the list who use something other than OS-X usually run OS 9.x. There are many places to find a copy of OS 9, eBay, OWC and others. Good luck.>
Um, Doug, my G3 Beige DT233 runs OS 8.1 with no problem whatsoever. Yes, I'm going back up to 9.x in the future, but in the meanwhile 8.1 runs good. Why would Daniel's G3 B&W ONLY run OS 8.6 and higher? Seems to me, if he has the OS 8 CD ROM, and presuming his G3 is (a) has all functional components, and (b) all of those components are hooked up properly, he really ought to be able to boot up from that CD ROM, from which he should be able to install OS 8 on his HD. Alas I can't help him and be able to say why he's having this problem (sorry about that, Daniel -- I also have a retail OS 8 CD ROM but I used to successfully boot from it by pressing the C key), it's just that the problem itself and the idea that he's got to have OS 8.6 or higher to solve it just doesn't make sense to me. A question for you, Doug, (and other G-listers) -- sure, a Mac bought either brand new, or a used one with an OS already installed will be running the OS it came with unless and until its owner decides to update it -- and certainly some Macs which are technically G3s have some differences (that's why they call one a B&W and another a Beige for instance), but if you wipe the OS on any G3 (or somehow get one which has no OS on it at all, as Daniel just did), on the very basic level, isn't a G3 a G3, and unless individual owners "soup up" their G3s by putting in bigger HDs, faster processors, more memory or updating their OS's from what they had when they bought them, the G3s themselves should all be more or less the same? And yeah, Daniel, welcome to the G-list. :-) ~Yersinia. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
