An iBook, you probably have Apple Care? It's time for a "Hey Apple" phone call just so they open a case number for it and you have the "hard drive making strange noises" complaint on file.

Is this a sign of failure?
Possibly, it may also be this one is noisier than normal and/or you have great hearing and a real quiet environment?

Do the ibook's hard drive last longer than the 2 year hard drives you all
are talking about??
All hard drives wear out, most will give 3+ years, but it is a mechanical device with moving parts. I would guess my personal experience with OEM installed drives from Apple has been longer than that, but they all die eventually. Thus the computer users mantra: "Backup regularly, Backup regularly, Backup regularly" <G>
