Yeah it is probably time for a new hard drive. I would recommend a

You can hear my ibook's hard drive run. Click, click, click, as the hard
drive works. Not a constant noise and it has been this way since we got it
about a year ago.

No, it's a sudden appearance of a click-click-click and also stalling or freezing at the same time, or not booting properly. Not the regular tick....ticktick of a drive working, but it's a very definite whirrCLICKwhirrCLICKwhirrCLICK noise.

It's pretty obvious something's not right when it does this.

Many drives make various noises. The key is to learn to recognize when a noise is new and associated with other problems.

Is this a sign of failure?
Do the ibook's hard drive last longer than the 2 year hard drives you all
are talking about??

Hard to say, it really depends on how roughly the iBook's been treated; also 2 years is a very short time for a hard drive. 5 years is more 'normal'; I have a 10 year old SCSI 9G drive going strong at home. Of course it's a 5 1/4 FH Seagate, built like a tank, meant for 24/7 server use at the time, and the whole thing weighs about 8 pounds ;-)

It is, however *ALWAYS* a good idea to have a current backup of your data, no matter what drive you use or how old it is.
