Appletalk doesn't NEED IP addresses. apletalk is NOT TCP/IP based, it's a different networking protocol entirely.


Appletalk is a 'self-discovering' networking protocol that needs nothing more than two devices running appletalk in order to form a functioning network.

Moreover, Rendezvous is the same thing, only for TCP/IP. It's also cross-platform and open source (Rendezvous is Apples implementation of ZeroConf. <http://www.zeroconf.org> Not working right now, see also <http://zeroconf.sourceforge.net/>)

A router is ONLY needed to *bridge* two networks, for example the Internet (as provided by your broadband isp) and your home LAN.
