You are probably right, but my standards are pretty high and the $40 iMic
actually isn't bad.  It is clean and crisp and well balanced with no artifacts. 
I figured if it didn't cut it, or I need more, it's easy enough to pass the
thing on.  Serves me ok for now.

Of course, if you are in need of multichannel recording, you need to go a
different route.  There are good usb and firewire options as well as pci boards.

If your needs are high end, then that's what you should do.
