I'm talking about word processed documents in AppleWorks 6, the data in
my Gene 4.3.4 application (which is not only periodically referenced but
added to occasionally) and my ginormous Claris Emailer archive of old
emails, many of which contain brainstorms and other things I go back to
look at for reference (not to mention how much I love the Claris Emailer
application for regular day-to-day email usage).

All of these programs keep separate data files, IIRC, albeit some will only open in their current configurations under the software you're running. For example, although editing is a different story, I bet your AppleWorks documents will open in Preview. If you want you could reformat them (simply Save As) as PDF's., or even XML, and be able to keep them around for a long time.

The Claris Email Archive will be similar. Just Save As a more universal document type.

Don't know anything about Gene, but check and see if it has a Save As in its menus and check out the filetypes available.

 All three of these
applications are for Mac Classic (i.e., below OS X: I use them on both my G3 Beige which is on OS 9.2.2 and my Powerbook 5300c which is on OS 8.6).

OK, but applications and data files are not the same thing. That's why many apps offer more than one way to save, so that the data files aren't so software-dependent.

So, if you want to upgrade at all, I recommend doing it soon, i.e., don't wait for MacTels. Then you'll be able to run OS 9.2.2 under Classic and take as long as you want to get your data in shape to run with newer software in OSX.

Then, somewhere down the road, if you want to get a MacTel, it will be OK. AFAIK, all the current OSX apps will run under Rosetta on a MacTel.

But Classic will not.

As I mentioned awhile back, I develop in SuperCard. This is an IDE, a high-level interpreted language set of developer tools. Its authors wrung it out under on a MacTel at the last WWDC in San francisco when the MacTels were introduced. It ran fine under Rosetta on a 3.0 gHz MacTel. Rosetta is much less visible than Classic.

Of course, none of that means there won't be problems; comes with the territory you know ;-)

All the best,
Ken N.
