I reset both the NVRAM and the PRAM.  Like I said, I pursued all the
"normal" avenues that would be prudent in this situation.

I waited 4 chimes on the PRAM, I thought 4 was a good number but maybe
that was not sufficient. I will try for 8 and see what happens, but I
don't hold high hopes.

This is so beautifully simple I did not even think of it.  Thanks for
the tip.  This will definitely be the first thing I try when I get
home from work today.
