You are accessing the internet using an Airport Extreme(a wireless
router) and that has a firewall. Your normal mail server address will
not allow to you to access(send or check)your email because you are
behind that firewall using your ISP's simplified domain name. You
must use the name of the server plus the domain name.
For example, I had the same problem setting up my first wireless
router. The normal setting for Shaw(in Canada)is: shawmail for both
sending and receiving mail, as per my ISP's set up instruction.
However, I could not receive any email until I change it to
shawmail.vc.shawcable.net, which is the server plus the domain name.
Hope that clears things up a bit.
