The G3 is currently running OS 9, however I want to install a larger than stock HDD and add some RAM so I can run OSX on it
Look for extensions that have 'Stealth' or 'Griffin' or 'gPort' in the name - those would be the drivers for the serial port. Also check in Apple System Profiler to see if the port shows up, and if it lists a model name or number and/or the vendor/manufacturer.
OSX probably won't support the Serial port - the external serial modems I have seen are not cheap - usually around $50
There are OS X drivers for the gPort, probably for the Stealth as well. If you can find out which it is you may be able to d/l the software from the mfr's website. Used serial modems can be had at reasonable prices via the Swaplist. Heck, I have a ZOOM 56K Dualmode you can have for $20; solid and dependable but I don't use dial-up at all any more....
