Greetings fellow G-Listers... I hope your holiday went better than mine: the attempt to turn my G3/266 into a G3/400 went so horribly awry it serves as a perfect example of why I tend to be so adamant about my "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy I come off as a stubborn ignoramus who refuses to ever try anything new -- which, I assure you, I'll be returning to after this incident, hahaha. In fact, for the time being I don't even have a G3 anymore. So, until further notice, I'm back on my old 7200/120 and OS 8.1 again while I wait for my boyfriend to build me a "new" Beige. I'm going to spare you all the awful details (we KILLED a beautifully set up and fully functional G3 to put in a faster PROCESSOR!! How did I let myself get all hot and bothered over THAT idea?) except where relevant to this list of questions we need answered for the rebuild. Up where he is and where he works, he's got access to, and permission to take all the parts he could possibly want for this, an array of tools, and he promised he's going to return to me with a fully functional G3/400 that does everything I was doing on my 266 only faster, and with more "stuff" if it's possible. But he does have questions, which I'm going to pose here. Thank you all in advance for your help. Just because I think I was smart to keep the 7200 to use as a backup machine doesn't mean that only one day of using it again isn't about to have me tearing my hair out of my head. ;-)
1. Confirmation in general: I think I recall someone saying here that short of tall RAM sticks since they don't fit, anything from of a Beige MT will work in a Beige DT. Is this true? Specifically, my bf found a motherboard from a MT with an 83 Grackle which physically fits in a DT, plus, he says all the 83 Grackles he runs across come out of MTs, not DTs. Which brings us to the relevant part of the attempted upgrade of MY Beige DT: I had a 66 Grackle, and yes, we did follow the jumpering instructions for a 66 bus and also to run the new processor at its rated speed of 400 (no overclocking). 2. My Beige DT was a Rev 3. Can the Rev 3 ROM from my Beige be transplanted to the MT mobo? 3. He also found an AV card in this MT and we talked about the idea that since a good deal of my music collection is on cassette tape (I'd only recently gotten iTunes for my Beige a couple of months ago), if I had an AV card, maybe I could convert the music on these tapes to MP3 and play them on iTunes. So, will an AV card pulled from a MT work in a DT and will this make me capable of turning some of my cassette albums into MP3s? 4. What other hardware -- and software -- is necessary to turn songs from cassette tapes to MP3s? Oh yeah...OS 9.2.2 and hopefully freeware, too. ;-) Thank you all again... ~Yersinia. ________ "If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?" -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
