you can fit the taller ram stick in, JUST WATCH OUT FOR YOUR FINGERS.>

Hahaha, thank you. But we've got plenty of low-profile RAM...the same 768
megs (in three 256 meg sticks) which were running in the Beige before the
upgrade attempt. We're keeping the RAM, along with the CDRW burner and HD.

Me: My Beige DT was a Rev 3. Can the Rev 3 ROM from my Beige be
transplanted to the MT mobo?

You: Yep, no problems.

Excellent. Thank you so much.

<IIRC, the av card is not supported in OS X, just 9. Since you run 9,
iirc, it should work but I do not know what software is needed.
Audacity is available for OS 9 at
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/mac
and is free and MAY work with the av card>

OS X is not at all a concern for me -- except to avoid it and apps that
require it. ;-) However, I'll go to this link and download Audacity for
OS 9 so I can try it. I'm sure I can stash it nicely on a Zip disk while
I wait for my "new" Beige to try it out on. Thank you for the URL.

<I am SLOWLY ripping my lps and tapes in OS X using the iMic from
griffin. It plugs into a usb port and if you use Audacity you can save
the file as an AIFF i think, then import it into itunes and convert to
MP3 from there if you like. I am keeping all my ripped lps in aiff
format to preserve the sound quality as much as possible. Just
remember that aiffs take a lot of disk space. For example, Kate Bush's
lp The Dreaming which is about 40 minutes takes up 443MB of disk space
as an AIFF.>

Yeah, I've got a sizable record collection too, but I seriously doubt
I'll ever try making MP3s from the records. This isn't just because of
needing to find the right equipment and software to do it, but also
because I would have to either move my "main stereo" to the bedroom where
the computer is, or move the computer into the living room -- and not
only is all that jockeying heavy stuff around just too much for me
physically, there isn't any room for that stereo in the bedroom and
nowhere to put the computer in the living room either. The tapes I can
do, providing the AV card and Audacity work (or I find some other
software which WILL work on OS 9) because I have a "boom box" with
cassette player I can set on top of the printer -- line outs from the
boom box to line ins on the AV card shouldn't be too hard. ;-)

On your comments concerning AIFF, disk space and sound quality -- the
only time I ever got fanatical about sound quality, was when it was my
OWN music on the line. I was always somehow content to listen to other
people's albums on middle-of-the-road and even low-end stereo equipment.
Unlike my "cheapskate" approach to computers, I saw nothing wrong with
going broke to buy synthesizers and recording equipment to use for my own
stuff and spending hours laying tracks that weren't necessary for the
music itself, but would enhance the mixdown (doubling tracks so I could
mix the original and doubled track so they'd circle your head or the room
in a stereo field: in opposite directions simultaneously!), while I
played records and tapes on a $75 Radio Shack stereo with really tinny
speakers, and tapes on my stock car stereo (I never "jazzed it up"). LOL.
I still have and use that same turntable, but I did get better speakers.
Not great ones, but at least they aren't tinny. ;-) So -- I don't need
to "waste" disk space with AIFF, and on my iTunes my MP3 import
preference is set to "better quality," not "best quality" -- are fine by
me. :-)

Good luck on your LP conversion project, and thanks again for the help.

~Yersinia.
