Howdy,
I have seen behavior like this once before and it had to do with
handling of VFAT. FAT16 and FAT32 only really handle names of what are
called the 8.3 style. Longer names are handled by a logical level
called VFAT. I'll summarize, but if you want more detail, look at the
wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8.3_filename
Every long filename gets an 8.3 filename, as well. There are other
entries in the FAT to store the rest of the name. On the device I
looked at, if I just dragged a bunch of files to it, the device seemed
to sort them oddly. When I looked at the 8.3 names associated with each
file, it was obvious why they were sorting the way they were. That MP3
player is long dead, but you may have a similar situation. I found that
if I dragged the files to the device one at a time, and in order, I got
the results I wanted.
My player was a Lexar, not an Olympus.
Good luck,
Ralph
