Hello Anne,
My personal guess is that the Pioneer model would generally be regarded as a
more dependable model "de facto' since they were the original manufacturers
of the SuperDrive design for Apple. Personally, I have used them and other
manufacturers (inc. a current TSSTCorp. Dual-layer in a LaCie external
housing) with no hitches.
I have played movies on Pioneer 106, 111, and 112 models, so the 116 should
not be a problem. For what it's worth, having a LightScribe supported unit
does not mean you HAVE to use LightScribe-capable media - they will use any
appropriate DVR and CDR media for your tasks.
