Pioneer, in particular, marketed a large number of models which
featured DVD-RAM reading, only, and NO DVD-RAM WRITING.

For that same basic model, there was a higher-cost sub-model which
restored DVD-RAM writing.

So, it is NOT A TYPO.

Bottom line is: Pioneer offers models and sub-models which are
physically identical in every respect, except for the firmware, and
for the extra features which that firmware provides, you do pay extra.

In several cases, it is possible to obtain third-party firmware for
certain Pioneer drives which:

1) restored DVD-RAM writing, and

2) extended the media table to include more, and faster media.

BenQ drives of several models are actually Pioneers. These usually
have full features, and, indeed, may have extra features.

If a Pioneer drive has 1.xx firmware, then that is the real Pioneer
firmware. However, if the drive has 8.xx firmware, then that drive
has BenQ firmware.

As marketing pressures have shrunk profits to the very bone,
manufacturers have taken every possible opportunity to squeeze the
product, and, yes, the customer.

In general, but not always, OEM (not boxed) versions do not have the
extra features, whereas Retail (boxed) versions do have the extra
features.
