What is this? Stump the Gurus week?? First the multiple . directories  
and now this?

Try logging in as a different user and testing.

This will let you know if it's a user pref or something.

Then try is boot in safe mode and try to mount an installer CD.

This will let you know if it's a third-party driver or something.

The words " a scanned activation via an iLok dongle." raise warning  
bells.

INstall LittleSnitch and see what's trying to talk to the internet?
