Agreed.

You're right - the drive does not even attempt to spin; not until I unplug
the Ethernet cable (that's the weird part to me).

Yep, I am more used to a consistent "not spinning up, period" performance to
diagnose drive meltdown.

Gotcha. Done a few myself, too-sometimes I can find those "bumpers" that the
OEM units have in place of the tray face, and will stick 'em on when I am in
an especially OC mood :-)
