is there any reason why not to use 9.1.1 on a G3? I'm just listening to music with it, and that not very often. If there are features that don't run on a G3 (like video and the like): if you don't use this particular function you are safe with 9.1.1, right?
There are some GUI speed issues. But for basic music playing, it works. The eq works too; just makes it chew up a bit more cpu. Turn off the eye-candy visualizer, and such.
I don't recall that it ever fell into a hole or anything - just got a bit slow sometimes, especially when accessing the Store. For ripping CDs, and adding tracks, it's even smart enough to disable the encoding modules that require altivec.
FWIW, iTunes is such a pig... for basic music playing, you might want to use an app such as Audion on your G3. It will play the music *without* any of the bog.
