I've used SoundApp on OS8.6, very stable, runs nicely in background, small
footprint.

There's a hack to get iTunes 1.1 to run under OS8.6, which I've used.

Using a Hex Edit, open a copy of the iTunes application and search for this
pattern of hex bytes in the Data Fork: 2C03 0900 4080
  Change 0900 to 0800.

The advantage of iTunes IMO is you can set the volume levels for each
individual mp3. This is more of an issue for music one has recorded which
may not be normalized as are CD-rips.
