The reason he let himself get cut down wasn't because Vader outsmarted him or had more teaching from palpatine. He let himself get cut down so as to distract Vader and give Luke the time to run off in the Falcon. But he knew he wasn't really going to die... so he let it happen.

I haven't read that series yet... but thanks for the recommendation.
Will definitely check it out. And I'm not surprised noone could come
close to matching Vader... though Obi-Wan beating him would've been
something to see in episode 4.
