Richard I do take the point about propper 3D, though actually monkey business and to a lesser extent technoshock both feature a degree of movement in the vertical axis.

However, where as shades of doom represents mainstream 3D games as they were in about 1994, and indeed swamp has taken that even further, I'd say the current state of audio side scrollers is not even into the early 1980's.

another way of putting it would be to say that we are for example fourty percent closer to mainstream 3D games, where as we're probably only about five percent closer to side scrollers.
