yeah I know its called a reformat.
you need to reformat every so often.
I think if we went back to where every program had its own
configuration we would never have these issues but we wouldn't have
the security either.

True enough. Windows is especially bad about drive corruption and that is
why Microsoft has to have tools like Disk Defrag to maintain the partition
table. If they didn't the partition table where Windows resides would
defragment and eventually become corrupted beyond recovery. That is
precisely why I don't leave a lot of personal data on my C: drive unless I'm
copying it to my laptop for portibility.
Even then the data itself is backed up 12 ways to Sunday. :D
