Hi dark,

Backing up frequently is definitely the best way to secure your data.
The more backups you have the greater the chances your data will
survive a catastrophic PC failure, virus, or whatever. As my high
school computer teacher use to say over and over again "save early and
save often." Well, the key today is "back up early and back up often."

Hi Tom.

Fair enough, at least not having them in a folder who's name refers to
documents helps, though given that uac seems to cause problems for
installing older software I'll have to turn it off anyway so that's not
really as much an issue for me.

Of course, the ultimate in security is frequent backups, which is why i do that on a very regular basis, and really there's no better way to keep stuff

safe.

when my first machine broke in 2008, I'd have been in a right mess without
all my backups, indeed I've got stuff on there which I've head for years,
such as the 2nd edition d&d rules in ms word format, as well as lots! of
games and audio.

Hi tom.

That is true, but unfortunately mostt people don't take the advice. when I bought my desktop in 2008, after my previous machine's hard drive basically failed, the nice local place I got it from said apparently I was the first person they've ever encountered who, after a computer crash just wanted to buy a new machine and wasn't asking them to try recover lots of stuff from a broken old one.

People don't seem to remember unfortunately, though having lived in the days of floppy disks where a fall from a desk could do in your data, I learnt the importance of backups very much! :D.

Beware the grue!
