You are correct. A tube of 10% paste has 100mg per gram of paste. If you
have a small gecko dosed at your dosage (not necessarily mine) for a small
gecko I think you can see by some simple math that the quantity needed would
be so small that the margin for error is quite significant. Paste is not a
good option for small reptiles IMO. While toxicity studies in dogs and cats
show a wide safe therapeutic range I have seen reptiles brought in after
home treatment which did not make it. It may be due to sensitivity to the
drug itself or due to hypersensitivity to antigen release from the dying
parasites.
Without knowing what parasites are present it is a shot in the dark to treat
with fenbendazole. If there is a heavy protozoal burden you might miss the
target. Many parasites are not just susceptable to this drug. Without
knowing first you may miss a parasite which has a direct life cycle or one
which needs strict husbandry considerations to erradicate.
If you shotgun treat, how would you ever feel safe adding that animal to
your colony? Colony disasters due to improper quarantine procedures,
including proper diagnosis and treatment, are common.
Establish a relationship with your vet. For clients with large colonies you
can work out a colony fecal screening. Brings down the cost and lets you
know what you are dealing with.
