Hi Tracy ~ I do realize how uncomfortable a topic this is for geckophiles. Thanks for being brave and sharing your sad experiences with your African fat tail. We all learn from experiences like yours.
The injection might be quicker? Some of us let nature take it's course. In my experience some geckos seem to be incredibly tough and hang on till the bitter end. I do wonder how much they are suffering and what their pain level is.
