Giving out a Debian or Red Hat or Mandrake would leave open their options for support. CDs are cheap. Trying to shoehorn a bunch of mixed software wouldn't have any benefit, unless you abandon the idea of creating a custom distribution and offer an "add-on" CD of software that the distribution doesn't currently have, such as OpenOffice, nVidia drivers (or scripts to obtain, build, and install them if licensing doesn't permit), and books in electronic format. One other avenue to consider would be the possibility to have the Rute ( http://rute.sf.net ) printed and donated to libraries. Having it done at Kinkos might be prohibitively expensive, but does anyone have ties to publishers or printing companies that can possibly get this done at a reasonable rate? -Tim On Fri, 2002-07-19 at 13:13, Mnemonic wrote: -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I think that what was originally intended was that we get everything that might be needed by most users onto one disc. A full-blown distribution is my preference, however, there is a lot of software that comes with many distributions that most people will never use. Consider this: Which is more intimidating, too many choices or no choice at all? It can be argued both ways. Do your average users really want ten window managers from which to choose? Maybe....maybe not. The answer is not readly apparent in my mind. There are quite a few variables that must be considered before making a final decision regarding the software that is made available to everyone via our public library system. - -K On Friday 19 July 2002 12:51, you wrote: > I really don't get the point of stripping down a full-featured > distribution to expose to new users.
