Did a bit of surfing via Google and found several more theories
about the burning of the Library of Alexandria.

All I can say with certitude is that Lawrence Durrell captured
the spirit of Alexandria in the four novels of his Quartet. Durrell,
in turn, liked to quote from Cavafy, probably the last notable
Greek poet of Alexandria. Got me curious enough to check
out a book of Cavafy's poetry (in translation) from a local, not
yet burned, library, and read it.

I confess my taste in poetry is a bit to the twisted, from Catullus
to Baudelaire.
