If the hardware will support it, do a RAID-1+0 or 0+1. I did a 1+0 on an
older scsi claRRion at my last job and the disk performance was
incredible.

Or what about creating a seperate filesystem on a mirrored pair just for
the database files, keeping everything else on the current drive.
