How much more RAM can you put on that board? Is there enough expansion room for a ram disk home? A ramdisk for the individual user's cache would take hard disk problems out of the equation. I don't know if SCO does that, but it sounds like a cheap fix to me.
I might also do a df to make sure that the /home or other partitions are not crammed full of temporary files at peak times.
