At boot time, the drive in my laptop starting giving SMART 'your drive is
about to die' errors. I called Dell and they sent a new, blank drive. I
wanted to transfer the entire disk image to the new disk, so i did this:

Booted Knoppix 3.3.

dd if=/dev/hdc | ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] 'cat - > /orassa2/ray/laptop.dd'
(to backup the image to a machine with 60gb free...)

Changed out the drive.

ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] 'cat /orassa2/ray/laptop.dd' > /dev/hdc

The backup took 8 hours for 60gb, the restore only took 7 hours. This
probably only works with very similar drives. I looked at partimage but
it only does partitions, and i have 5 partitions, so it would have been a
pain. The dd trick worked great though. Are there any other tools with
Knoppix to do full disk backups (besides dd, haha)?
